Ní is a negative particle.

It causes lenition (when followed by a lenitable consonent).

It is used with all verbs, regular and irregular, in all tenses apart from the past.

In the case of the past tense:

  • It is never used with regular verbs. (The particle níor is used with these.)
  • It is used with certain, but not all, irregular verbs. (The particle níor is used with the others.)
